Journey through Sanxia old street 三峽老街 (21.10.12)

After last week's adventure at 烏來 and 萬里, this time, we traveled to 三峽 and 林口. We took a bus from the mrt station and reached our destination, Sanxia. There, we met into some trouble at first but all these were resolved. We met a super friendly guide who took time off to show us around the old street and explained in quite some detail the interesting bits about the old street.

The old street itself

A closer look at the street

The old street was built when Taiwan was still under Japanese rule thus you can see a mix of Chinese, Western and Japanese culture in the architecture of the buildings.

Hundred year old live well
This is a mini attraction situated near the entrance of the street. It is apparently a hundred year old well which still has running water. It was quite cute seeing people peer super hard into the well to see the water inside. The well was covered with a piece of glass and had ropes to protect it.

One of the shop names
Sanxia old street is apparently one of the better preserved old streets in Taiwan. The buildings are still in pretty good condition. Above is a pic of a shop that was there during Japanese rule but it is now no longer there. One interesting thing about the title is that it was made from beer bottles. According to our friendly guide, people in the past used the curved parts of beer bottles and pieced them together to form the shop names. People also used pictures to symbolize what they wished.

Japanese influenced architecture
According to our friendly guide, the roof of this shop had a design influenced by Japan. Apparently, the shape of the roof is meant to imitate the design of the Japanese military.

At the entrance of the diy workshop

Besides 牛角(pictures can be found in FB), another specialty of Sanxia is their blue cloth dying techniques. You can find a few diy workshops around the old street and try designing your own piece of work.

Products made using dyeing techniques

The place where u can diy your own work. Didn't try this time cuz i tried it before

The vats where the dye is. You can see children dyeing their work.

After dyeing, you need to let it dry. Beautiful handkerchiefs done by other ppl
